Following his adoption, his parents changed his name from Anthony Reed to Thomas Davidson. Davidson also has two older white siblings called Michael and Beryle.

His new family moved a lot during his young life; by the time he was five years old; they had moved from Colorado to Wyoming to Oregon. Unfortunately, his parents divorced when he was five years old.

His mother then moved the children to Washington D.C. and settled in Takoma Park after a stay in Wheaton, Maryland, and Rosemary Hills in Silver Spring. His education consisted of Rosemary Hills Elementary School, Sligo Middle School, and Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School in Bethesda, Maryland.

He graduated in 1981 and studied communications while interning at the radio station at the University of the District of Columbia.

During this time of his life, he had many jobs, such as working in a military medical center's kitchen, cleaning at Roy Rogers, busing tables at the Wheaton IHOP, and working in the storeroom of a Hechinger in Hyattsville, Maryland.

Tommy Davidson's Early Career

Tommy Davidson initially started as a stand-up comedian.

He began his comedy career in 1986, following a convincing conversation with a childhood friend to perform stand-up at The Penthouse strip club in Park View, Washington D.C. Following this gig, he continued performing in various comedy clubs throughout the Washington D.C. Metropolitan region, Baltimore and Philadelphia.

He opened for Patti LaBelle, Starpoint, and Kenny G throughout this time.

1987 was a breakout year for young Davidson as he not only performed on a fundraising telethon for WHMM 1987 but also won an amateur stand-up competition at the Apollo Theater. Following this win, he moved to North Hollywood and met Martin Lawrence.

His star began to shine when he met Robert Townsend, a comedy director, who caught his set at the Comedy Store and asked him to be the warm-up comic for an HBO special.

Following performances in the Luther Vandross and Anita Baker shows, he appeared on The Arsenio Hall Show and finally found his way on the main cast of In Living Color.
