Who is Elaine Chappelle?

Elaine Chappelle is the wife of iconic comedian, Dave Chappelle.

She was born as Elaine Mendoza Erfe in Brooklyn, New York on August 31, 1974.

It’s been widely reported that she once aspired to become a professional chef, but ultimately decided that she would stay at home to raise the family she shares with Dave.

She tends to avoid appearing in public as she likes to keep her life private, but does occasionally accompany her husband to large events.

In 2019, she showed her support when Dave won the Mark Twain Prize for American Humour, cheering him on from the audience.

When did Dave and Elaine get married?

Dave and Elaine got married in a small ceremony with close friends and family in 2001.

In 2006, the pair moved to Ohio to live a quiet life.

He told CBS News in 2017: “I’ll be reminded that I’m a celebrity here, but I don’t think about it at all until somebody asks me for a selfie or something.

"It won’t even occur to me that that’s what it is. … It’s almost like a nature reserve where they’ll let me run free.

“I’m a protected commodity.”

Dave and Elaine met in Brooklyn while he was struggling to establish himself as a stand-up comedian.

He revealed to Howard Stern about their relationship: “She was with me when I was poor.” 

As his career began to kick off, the You’ve Got Mail star decided to take his relationship with Elaine to the next level.

Despite the ups and downs of any relationship the pair still remain strong and have been married for the past two decades.

Do Dave and Elaine have children?

Dave and Elaine have three children.

Daughter Sanaa, also known as Sonal, was born in 2009.

They also have two sons, Ibrahim (born 2003) and Sulayman (born 2001).

Sonal has followed her father into the showbiz world as she played a cameo role in 2018’s A Star Is Born, as her real-life dad’s daughter.

The two later appeared together on the Toronto International Film Festival’s red carpet for the movie’s debut there.

The comedian gave a glimpse of what it felt like to have a family on Dave Chappelle: Equanimity & The Bird Generation, a Netflix stand-up special. 

He said: “I see my age in my children. I came home from the road not long ago — I was gone for weeks and weeks, and when I came back, nobody was home.

"Not one person in my family thought maybe I’d like to see them when I got back."
