American drummer, musician and percussion expert, Josh Dun is the talk of this piece. He is part of the American musical duo Twenty One Pilots alongside Tyler Joseph who is the lead singer. The band was founded in 2009 by four men, however, in 2011 two of its founding members – Chris Salih and Nick Thomas – left, leaving Josh and Tyler. The duo has several singles and albums to their credit. Their most successful single was Stressed. He was twice nominated for Grammys and eventually won one. It also topped several US music charts and had over 2.6 million sales by the end of 2016.

Josh Dun was born Joshua William Dun on June 18, 1988. The drummer comes from a religious family with Christian leanings, however, as a child, Josh was very rebellious. He was still in discussion with his parents – Laura Lee and William Earl. They were so confused about what to do with him, that they considered sending him to military school. He didn’t do any better at school because he was still being sent to detention. Josh revealed that he never used drugs or alcohol, but his character was nothing to talk about while in high school.

He did not come from a family of musicians but he always loved music from an early age. As a young boy, he loved the punk rock genre and would always go to a nearby music store to buy albums of that genre. He preferred secular rock but his parents thought otherwise. So he would buy the albums and hide them, when and if his parents found them, they would exchange them for Christian stones.

Josh Dun started playing instruments at a young age as well and started with trumpets. He was taught by an instructor but was not good with it. Later, he switched to the drums and learned to play. He didn’t go to college but continued to play drums and left his parents’ house to live with his friends. He started working at a musical instrument retail company in Ohio called Guitar Center. Dun’s job with the retail chain spanned three years.

He had his first opportunity to play as a band drummer in March 2010 for a rock band called House of Heroes (HOH). Replacing the band’s drummer (Colin Rigsby) who went to spend time with his family – temporarily he played in most of their songs on the Suburban album. He left the band in October when Colin returned – having joined the band on tour.

After HOH, Josh decided to move to Nashville, but was recruited by former Twenty One Pilots drummer Salih Chris. Salih and co-founder, Nick Thomas left the band before mid-2011. After their departure, Twenty One Pilots became a two-man orchestra that included vocalist, Tyler Joseph and Josh Dun as its sole drummer. Together they released a few albums, the first being Regional at Best. They then signed to Fueled by Ramen Records. Subsequently, the duo released other albums such as Navire, Blurryface, Trench etc.

Stressed is unquestionably their most successful song to date. It won them Best Pop Duo/Group Performance at the Grammys. It was released in April 2015 and after a year it had sold around 2.6 million copies.

Josh Dun was born into the family of Laura LeeMcCollum and William Earl Bill Dun in Columbus, Ohio, USA. Laura was a hospice, social worker and nurse caring for the spiritual and mental health of terminally ill patients; William Earl, on the other hand, was a physiotherapist who helped with the recovery of the injured.
